I always thought my parents had a solid marriage.

Then, while using my dad’s iPad, a message appeared:

“I’m still thinking about what you did to me in that hotel room.”

It was from a woman named Chloe.

Their messages went back more than a year.

When I confronted Dad, he barely reacted.

“All guys cheat,” he said. “Your mother has a good life. Don’t ruin it over nothing.”

I called Mom immediately.

When she saw Chloe’s name, her reaction surprised me.

They had known each other in college.

Instead of crying, Mom gathered financial records, contacted an attorney, packed Dad’s suitcase—and invited Chloe to breakfast the next morning.

But that night, I searched through Mom’s old college boxes.

I found photographs, then a journal.

Years ago, Chloe had been seriously dating a man named David.

And Mom had secretly slept with him.

Even worse, she had written:

“Men cheat. That’s what men do. The only thing that matters is who they choose in the end.”

The next morning, Dad, Mom, and Chloe all began blaming one another.

Then I placed the journal on the table.

Silence.

Dad had betrayed Mom.

Chloe had knowingly helped him.

But Mom had once justified the exact same kind of betrayal when she benefited from it.

For once, nobody could pretend they were innocent.
