I was 23 when both my parents died in a car accident.

I thought nothing could hurt more until the will was read.

Our family home had been left to my father’s older sister, Diane.

She and I had never gotten along.

Most of my parents’ savings were gone after years of medical expenses, so I had almost nothing.

Two days later, Diane arrived with a suitcase.

“You’ve got until tomorrow to leave my house,” she said.

I reminded her that I had grown up there.

She didn’t care.

That night, I packed my clothes while she watched television in the living room.

The next morning, I walked outside carrying two bags.

A black limousine was parked by the curb.

The rear door opened and an older man called my name.

I recognized him as my father’s former attorney.

He handed me a sealed folder.

Inside was a document my parents had signed months earlier.

The house had been placed into a family trust.

Diane was only supposed to manage it temporarily while legal paperwork was completed. She could not sell it, rent it, or force me out.

At 25, ownership would transfer completely to me.

Diane apparently knew there were conditions—but assumed I didn’t.

The attorney walked inside with me.

Her expression changed the moment she saw him.

By that afternoon, Diane was the one packing.

I stood in the doorway watching her leave.

For the first time since losing my parents, the house felt like home again.
