For nearly four years, my husband, Jason, and I tried to have a baby.

Every negative test broke me a little more.

Jason already had a son with his ex, Olivia, which made me assume the problem had to be me.

Eventually, a friend recommended a fertility clinic.

I booked an appointment without telling Jason because I didn’t want to get his hopes up again.

After my consultation, I walked into the lobby and stopped cold.

Jason was sitting beside Olivia.

She was visibly pregnant.

Then he hugged her and whispered, “She can’t find out. I told her I’m working late.”

I felt sick.

Before I could confront them, a nurse appeared.

“Jason Miller?”

Both of them stood.

So did I.

Jason’s face went white when he saw me.

That’s when the truth finally came out.

Months earlier, Jason had secretly undergone testing.

His results showed that his chances of fathering another child naturally were extremely low.

Olivia’s baby wasn’t his.

She was acting as a surrogate for Jason’s sister, who had struggled with infertility for years.

Jason had been helping coordinate appointments because his sister wanted to announce the pregnancy herself.

But that wasn’t what hurt.

Jason had also hidden his own fertility results because he couldn’t admit that our struggle might involve him too.

I wasn’t angry about Olivia.

I was angry that I had spent years blaming myself while my husband already knew the truth.
