At seventy, I was raising my seven-year-old granddaughter, Ellie, alone. Money was so tight I sometimes had to choose between medicine and groceries.

One Friday at Walmart, Ellie found a diamond ring behind a candy display. For a second, I imagined what selling it could fix. But Ellie asked, “What if someone is crying because they lost it?”

We returned it to a distraught woman.

The next morning, her brother appeared at my door with a photograph of my late daughter-in-law, Claire—Ellie’s mother. The woman was Claire’s sister, and the ring had belonged to their mother.

Claire’s wealthy father had disowned her for marrying my son. Both died three years earlier, and none of her family attended the funeral.

I visited him in the hospital, furious. There I learned Claire had driven to his house the night she died, hoping to introduce Ellie. He watched her knock but never opened the door. Forty minutes later, the fatal accident happened.

“I was too proud,” he whispered.

I couldn’t forgive him. But Ellie had recently wished for a bigger family.

So I took her to meet him.

He cried, gave her the ring, and arranged money for her education.

We visit every Sunday now. Ellie gained family, even though some wounds may never heal.

And somehow, that lost ring brought them together.

At seventy, I was raising my seven-year-old granddaughter, Ellie, alone.
