For several days, I kept finding long brown hairs around our bathroom sink and shower.

At first, I ignored them.

Then it hit me.

My husband, Nathan, is completely bald, and my hair is cropped extremely short.

So where were they coming from?

I finally asked him.

He looked genuinely confused and said, “Maybe they’re stuck to your clothes from somewhere?”

It sounded possible.

Until I found more the next morning.

And the morning after that.

My imagination started going places I didn’t want it to go.

Instead of accusing him, I decided to come home early one afternoon without telling him.

His car was in the driveway.

As soon as I walked inside, I heard voices upstairs.

My hands started shaking.

I quietly climbed the stairs and pushed open the bathroom door.

A woman with long brown hair was standing there.

Beside her was Nathan.

I just stared.

Then the woman turned around.

It was his younger sister, Rachel.

She had recently left her boyfriend and was temporarily sleeping in our guest room during the day while I was at work.

Nathan hadn’t told me because Rachel was embarrassed and had begged him to keep it private.

I was relieved—but furious.

Not because she was there.

Because for almost a week, he had watched me become suspicious instead of simply telling me the truth.

The mystery hair had an innocent explanation.

The secrecy was the real problem.
