I was standing in line at a grocery store when I noticed a little girl ahead of me counting coins beside a small birthday cake.

The cashier counted again.

“You’re four dollars short, sweetheart.”

The girl’s face fell.

She quietly started sliding the cake away.

Without thinking, I stepped forward and paid the difference.

Her eyes filled with tears.

She hugged me tightly and whispered, “It’s for my mom. She’s sick. The doctors say this could be her last birthday.”

Before I could respond, she thanked me again and hurried out.

I stood there stunned.

A few minutes later, while walking toward my car, I felt something heavy in my coat pocket.

I reached inside and pulled out a small silver locket.

There was also a folded piece of paper.

Inside was a child’s handwriting:

“Thank you for helping me make Mom smile. This belonged to Grandma. Please keep it so you remember us.”

My heart sank.

I immediately went back inside and asked if anyone knew the girl.

The cashier did.

Her family lived only a few blocks away.

I returned the locket that afternoon.

Her mother was weak but smiling beside the birthday cake.

When she heard what her daughter had done, she started crying.

She pressed the locket back into my hand.

“She wanted you to have it,” she said.

I still have it.

Not because it’s valuable—

but because it reminds me how enormous four dollars can feel to someone who desperately needs one good day.

I was standing in line at a grocery store when I noticed a little girl ahead of me counting coins beside a small birthday cake.
