For five years, I kept my newborn daughter’s hospital bracelet beside my bed. Doctors had told me Lucy died the morning after her premature birth.

Then my sister Nora adopted a five-year-old girl named Ellie.

Ellie had my dark curls and the same little dimple I’d had as a child. I told myself the resemblance was coincidence, even as she climbed into my lap and called me Auntie Claire.

Two weeks after the adoption, Nora appeared at my door in tears.

“The agency found problems with Ellie’s original records,” she whispered.

The paperwork named the hospital where Lucy was born. The dates matched, too.

Then Nora handed me a preliminary DNA report.

It suggested Ellie was my biological daughter.

I could barely breathe. Had I mourned a living child for five years?

An independent test confirmed it: Ellie was Lucy.

Investigators later discovered that identification numbers for two newborns had apparently been switched during a hospital transfer. But no one could yet explain why I’d been told my baby died.

Nora feared I would take Ellie away. I feared losing her all over again.

We agreed Ellie would stay in her familiar home while professionals helped us navigate the truth.

One afternoon, she handed me two pink ribbons.

“Pigtails, Auntie Claire!”

My hands trembled as I braided my daughter’s hair.

For five years, I kept my newborn daughter’s hospital bracelet beside my bed.
