Six years ago, my mother was paralyzed in a car accident while driving to my daughter Mia’s school concert. I’d convinced her to go despite her exhaustion, and I’d blamed myself ever since.

Now 82, Mom was shopping for Mia’s birthday when a stranger accused her of faking her disability and kicked her wheelchair.

As I defended her, an old concert program slipped from her medical case.

Before I could examine it, security spotted an armed man near the entrance. Panic erupted.

I grabbed Mom’s wheelchair and rushed toward an exit, but she warned me I was heading toward danger.

“You’re not listening to me!” she said.

When I finally stopped, she guided us safely through an employee exit.

Outside, I unfolded the program. On the back, Mom had written about Mia singing beside her hospital bed after the accident.

“Losing something isn’t the same as losing everything.”

I broke down and confessed I’d spent six years feeling responsible for her injuries.

Mom held my hand.

“You didn’t drive through that red light,” she whispered. “I lost the ability to walk, but I didn’t lose my life.”

She reminded me that she could still make her own decisions.

When we returned to shopping, I finally asked before touching her wheelchair.

For once, I walked beside her instead of trying to protect her from everything.

Six years ago, my mother was paralyzed in a car accident while driving to my daughter Mia’s school concert.
