My mother was a midwife who helped deliver all three of my daughters. I trusted her more than anyone—until she appeared at my door carrying their keepsake boxes and confessed she’d hidden a secret for 13 years.

Inside each box was a letter marked “From your big sister.”

Mom revealed that my husband, Cody, had a 21-year-old daughter named Monica from before our marriage. He’d known all along. So had Mom.

Cody admitted he’d stopped visiting Monica when she was little. At sixteen, she’d messaged him, hoping to reconnect. He never replied because he feared losing us.

Four months earlier, Monica had written letters to our girls, desperate for them to know she existed. Mom promised to deliver them but kept delaying.

I contacted Monica myself. She wasn’t trying to disrupt our family. She simply wanted to know her sisters.

When I told our daughters, they were shocked. I gave them time to decide.

Three weeks later, Monica came over with homemade cookies. Watching my girls talk with their sister was heartbreaking and beautiful.

My marriage remains uncertain, and forgiving Mom will take time.

But when my eldest asked whether she could love Monica and still be angry with her dad, I told her yes.

Love doesn’t erase betrayal. And the truth belongs to all of us.

My mother was a midwife who helped deliver all three of my daughters.
