When my 80-year-old mother invited a homeless young man to dinner, my brother Peter thought she’d lost her mind.

Ethan was 24. He’d helped Mom gather groceries she’d dropped outside a pharmacy, then started visiting every Thursday. He fixed her porch, listened to stories about Dad, and spent his last $12 buying her yellow roses for her birthday.

Mom grew so fond of him that she even offered to marry him, hoping he’d have a home. Ethan gently refused.

Three months later, Mom died. Her will instructed us to invite Ethan to the lawyer’s office.

There, the lawyer handed him a locked wooden box. Peter suddenly shouted, “Don’t open it!”

Inside were a photograph of Dad’s old cottage, a key, and Mom’s letter. She had left Ethan the cottage because he’d shown her kindness without ever asking for money.

But another envelope explained Peter’s panic. He’d borrowed $87,000 from Mom, lied about what it was for, and signed a repayment agreement.

Mom hadn’t disinherited him. She simply wanted him to take responsibility.

Ethan hesitated to accept the cottage, afraid people would judge him. I told him Mom knew exactly what she wanted.

Two weeks later, I visited him there. He’d found a steady job and planted yellow roses outside.

Mom had finally given him a place to call home.
