I’ve always believed family property should stay with biological descendants.

My daughter, Emily, found out years ago that she couldn’t have children naturally.

When we discussed my will, I told her I planned to leave most of my estate to her younger brother, who had two children.

She was hurt, but we rarely discussed it afterward.

Last month, Emily and her husband adopted a six-year-old girl named Sophie.

I congratulated them, although I privately still struggled with the idea.

A few days later, Emily asked whether Sophie changed my decision about the inheritance.

I told her no.

“She’s our daughter, Mom,” Emily said.

“I understand that. But she’s not biologically related to us.”

Emily went quiet and left.

A week later, she sent me a photograph.

It showed a drawing Sophie had made at school titled “My Family.”

There was Emily, her husband, Sophie, and a woman labeled “Grandma Linda.”

I didn’t recognize her.

Underneath, Emily had written:

“Linda is our neighbor. She brought Sophie cookies, bought her school supplies, and told everyone she was proud to have another granddaughter.”

Then came the sentence that hurt most.

“Sophie already knows who makes her feel like family.”

I stared at that drawing for a long time.

I’d been so worried about who would inherit my house that I hadn’t even tried to get to know my granddaughter.

I called Emily that evening.

She answered, but she didn’t pretend everything was fine.

And honestly, I didn’t expect her to.

I’ve always believed family property should stay with biological descendants.
