My wife and I live in a small neighborhood with assigned parking spaces.

We have two vehicles: my everyday car and a specially modified van that my father uses because he’s in a wheelchair.

Both were registered with our property management company.

Our neighbor, Linda, hated that we had two vehicles.

One morning, she left a note on our windshield.

“ONE CAR PER HOUSE. FOLLOW THE RULES.”

I checked our parking agreement. We were allowed two spaces, so I ignored her.

Three days later, I woke up to the sound of a tow truck.

By the time I got outside, both vehicles were being taken away.

Linda stood on her porch smiling.

“Maybe you’ll listen next time,” she said.

I called the towing company immediately.

The manager explained that someone had submitted a removal request claiming to represent property management.

That someone was Linda.

Then things got worse.

The driver had improperly secured Dad’s wheelchair-accessible van, damaging its custom lift mechanism.

The repair estimate came to almost $25,000.

When I showed Linda the paperwork, she stopped smiling.

The real property manager confirmed she’d never authorized either tow.

We filed an insurance claim and submitted the documentation to the towing company.

The company recovered our vehicles, agreed to investigate the damage, and began looking into Linda’s false authorization.

The following week, Linda received a letter from their legal department.

She hasn’t complained about our parking since.

And Dad’s van? We’re still working through the repairs.

All because someone couldn’t mind her own parking space.

My wife and I live in a small neighborhood with assigned parking spaces.
