My wife, Rachel, and I had a pretty bad argument last Thursday.<\/p>\n
It started over money and turned into a conversation about everything we’d been frustrated with lately.<\/p>\n
We went to bed angry.<\/p>\n
The next morning, I left for work without saying much.<\/p>\n
When I got home that afternoon, our eight-year-old son, Mason, was sitting on the couch crying.<\/p>\n
“What’s wrong, buddy?”<\/p>\n
He looked at me and said, “Mom told me you’re not my real dad. She said she’s leaving us.”<\/p>\n
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.<\/p>\n
I’d raised Mason since he was two. His biological father had never been involved, but Mason had always called me Dad.<\/p>\n
I tried calling Rachel.<\/p>\n
No answer.<\/p>\n
Then I noticed a small suitcase beside Mason’s bedroom door.<\/p>\n
He’d packed his favorite toys and a photograph of us together.<\/p>\n
When Rachel finally came home, I confronted her.<\/p>\n
She started crying.<\/p>\n
During our argument, she’d told her sister she was considering staying elsewhere for a few days. Mason had overheard her saying I wasn’t his biological father.<\/p>\n
He’d put the two things together and thought I was leaving his life.<\/p>\n
Rachel admitted she’d handled everything badly.<\/p>\n
I knelt beside Mason and told him something I should’ve said years ago.<\/p>\n
“I didn’t have to become your dad, buddy. I chose to. And I still choose you.”<\/p>\n
He hugged me and wouldn’t let go.<\/p>\n
Rachel and I still had problems to work through.<\/p>\n
