I took my dog, Charlie, to the vet last Friday for his annual vaccinations.

The waiting room was busy, and Charlie was excited to see another dog sitting near the reception desk.

It was a beautiful Labrador wearing a bright blue vest.

Charlie started pulling toward him.

Before I could stop him, the receptionist raised her voice.

“Please keep your dog away! Can’t you see the vest?”

I apologized and moved to another seat.

Honestly, I felt embarrassed.

Everyone else seemed to know something I didn’t.

A few minutes later, the Labrador’s owner noticed me looking over.

She smiled and turned her dog slightly.

There was a patch on his vest that said:

“SERVICE DOG — PLEASE DO NOT DISTRACT.”

She explained that her dog, Max, was trained to alert her to certain medical emergencies.

Even at the vet, he needed to stay focused on her.

I felt awful.

“I honestly didn’t know,” I told her.

She was surprisingly kind about it.

“That’s okay. The important thing is giving him space.”

Then she explained something else.

Blue doesn’t automatically mean a dog is a service animal. Vests come in different colors, and the patches often explain what the dog needs.

Before leaving, I thanked her for explaining.

Charlie got his vaccinations, and I went home knowing something I hadn’t known that morning.

Now, whenever I see a dog wearing a vest, I read the message and ask before approaching.

I took my dog, Charlie, to the vet last Friday for his annual vaccinations.
