My mother passed away at 76 after a short illness.

She wanted to be cremated, so my sister and I followed her wishes.

A week later, we brought her ashes home.

My sister insisted on checking inside the urn before placing it on the mantel.

I thought it was unnecessary, but she opened it anyway.

Suddenly, she gasped.

There was a small silver locket resting above the sealed bag containing Mom’s ashes.

Inside was a photograph of a baby boy.

On the back, someone had engraved:

“Samuel, 1981. Forever my little boy.”

Neither of us knew anyone named Samuel.

I immediately called the funeral home.

The director explained that Mom had personally requested the locket be placed inside the urn after cremation.

She’d also left an envelope for us.

We collected it that afternoon.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Mom explained that before meeting our father, she’d given birth to a son.

Samuel had died when he was only four months old.

She’d spent years grieving privately and eventually found the courage to start another family.

She never told us because talking about him was still painful.

Her final request was simple.

“Please remember your brother, even though you never got to meet him.”

My sister and I cried together.

The following Sunday, we visited Samuel’s grave.

For the first time, we understood why Mom had always seemed so emotional around his birthday.

My mother passed away at 76 after a short illness.
