When my son Daniel and his wife Laura supposedly died in a car accident, I became guardian to their seven children. For ten years, I worked extra jobs, lost sleep, and did everything I could to give them a home. I’d even moved into their old house so the children felt safe.

Then my youngest granddaughter, Grace, found a dusty box hidden in the basement.

“Grandma, Mom and Dad didn’t die that night,” she whispered.

Inside were $40,000 in cash, copies of all seven children’s documents, and a map showing routes out of state. Another hidden folder contained overdue bills and a bank account number.

At the bank, I learned the account was still active, with recent transactions.

I asked the manager to begin closing it, knowing whoever controlled it would receive an alert.

Three days later, Daniel and Laura appeared on my doorstep. Alive.

They admitted they’d faked their deaths to escape crushing debt. They claimed they’d planned to return for their children, but ten years had passed without a word.

Then Daniel demanded access to the money.

Grace stepped forward. “You didn’t come back for us. You came back for cash.”

I told them to leave.

As my grandchildren gathered around me, I realized something: their parents had abandoned them, but they had never been without a family.

When my son Daniel and his wife Laura supposedly died in a car accident, I became guardian to their seven children.
