My twin boys, Noah and Ethan, celebrated their sixth birthday last Saturday.

We had a small party at home with cake, balloons, and a few relatives.

My sister, Melissa, arrived carrying two wrapped boxes.

The boys were excited. They grabbed their presents and ran into the living room.

A minute later, I heard crying.

I went to check.

Noah was holding an expensive toy truck.

Ethan’s box was almost empty.

Inside was a small pack of crayons and a handwritten note.

It said:

“Maybe next year you’ll get a better present if you learn to behave like your brother.”

I couldn’t believe it.

Ethan had accidentally broken a vase at Melissa’s house a month earlier. He’d apologized, and I’d already replaced it.

Apparently, she was still angry.

I walked into the kitchen and asked Melissa why she’d done that.

She shrugged.

“Kids need to learn that actions have consequences.”

I told her humiliating a six-year-old on his birthday wasn’t teaching him anything.

Then Noah came into the kitchen carrying his truck.

He placed it on the table.

“If Ethan doesn’t get a real present, I don’t want mine either.”

Melissa didn’t say anything.

I asked her to leave.

Later, my husband and I took both boys to pick out something together.

Ethan chose a dinosaur set.

Noah chose the same one.

That afternoon reminded me that my boys understood kindness better than some adults.
