My eight-year-old twins came home from trick-or-treating looking miserable. Their grandfather, Richard, had taken nearly all their best chocolate bars.

“I walked them around for two hours,” he said. “Consider it payment.”

My sons stood silently as he ate their candy. Later, Ethan admitted Grandpa had called him ungrateful for asking to keep his favorite caramel bar.

When my husband Michael got home, his expression changed.

“He did that to me and my brother every Halloween.”

Michael grabbed an empty pumpkin bucket and drove to his parents’ house.

He told Richard that taking candy wasn’t teaching gratitude. It was teaching children that affection came with a price. Richard dismissed it until Michael explained why he’d stopped asking his father to take him anywhere.

“You made us feel like we owed you for everything.”

Michael recovered the remaining chocolates and insisted on an apology.

Both boys still worried Grandpa might stop visiting.

The next evening, Richard returned with replacements. But Ethan asked something that finally silenced him.

“Grandpa, would you still take us places if we didn’t have candy?”

Richard admitted he’d learned the same behavior from his own father. Then he apologized.

Weeks later, Ethan voluntarily offered Richard a chocolate bar. This time, Grandpa asked, “Are you sure?”

For the first time, sharing was Ethan’s choice—and Richard understood the difference.
