I spent four months falling for a woman online. But when she saw me in my wheelchair on our first date, she turned pale and ran. I thought I knew why—until she revealed a secret from my past.

Three years earlier, I’d pushed my girlfriend, Rachel, out of the path of a speeding car. She escaped unharmed, but I suffered a spinal injury that left me unable to walk.

Rachel visited me twice before ending our relationship.

Heartbroken, I started a cooking blog. That’s where I met Hannah, a nurse who made me laugh with pictures of her disastrous baking attempts.

We talked for months, but I never mentioned my wheelchair.

When we finally met, Hannah recognized me immediately, whispered, “It can’t be you,” and fled.

Two days later, she appeared at my door, crying.

“I was your nurse after the accident,” she confessed.

She explained that she’d found an engagement ring in my jacket while helping Rachel collect my belongings.

“I thought showing her the ring would bring you closer. When I saw you alone, I thought I’d ruined everything.”

I assured her Rachel had made her own choice.

Then I remembered something.

“Who held my hand when I first woke up?”

Hannah’s eyes filled with tears.

“That was me, Matt.”

For three years, I’d believed it was Rachel.
