I’m 23, studying part-time, and working overnight shifts at a hospital.

I’ve shared an apartment with my roommate, Jessica, for almost a year.

We always got along pretty well.

But recently, I started noticing strange things whenever I came home from work.

My blankets were moved. My desk chair was never where I left it. Once, I even noticed scratches on my dresser.

I asked Jessica whether she’d been entering my room.

She said no.

After it happened several more times, I bought a small security camera.

Two nights later, while I was working, my phone received a motion notification.

I opened the app.

**Jessica was walking into my bedroom carrying a large shopping bag.**

She closed the door and opened it.

Then something jumped out.

**A tiny orange kitten.**

I watched as Jessica placed a blanket on my bed and let the kitten run around.

When I confronted her the next morning, she started crying.

She’d found the kitten abandoned near our apartment building.

Our landlord didn’t allow pets, so she’d been secretly keeping it in my room while I worked.

She figured I wouldn’t notice.

I was upset that she’d lied, especially because I have allergies.

But I also understood why she wanted to help.

We contacted a local animal rescue, which found the kitten a foster home.

Jessica apologized and agreed never to enter my room without permission again.

**I thought someone was going through my belongings. Turns out, my roommate had been hiding a kitten.**
