I’m 73, and I haven’t been to a nightclub in almost twenty years.

But last Saturday, I decided to go out.

A local club was celebrating its 30th anniversary, and I’d received a personal invitation.

When I arrived, a young bouncer blocked the entrance.

“Sorry, Grandpa. The retirement home is down the street.”

I thought he was joking.

“I’m actually expected here,” I explained.

He laughed.

“Sure you are. Now move along.”

A younger man waiting in line started making jokes about my age.

Then he stepped forward and tried to push me aside.

I told him to keep his hands to himself.

That’s when a woman came rushing out of the club.

“Mr. Harrison! There you are!”

The bouncer looked confused.

She turned toward him.

**”Do you have any idea who this man is?”**

He shook his head.

She explained that I’d played saxophone in the band that performed at the club’s opening night thirty years earlier.

I’d been invited back as a special guest for the anniversary celebration.

The bouncer immediately apologized.

I accepted, but told him something.

“Being old doesn’t mean someone doesn’t belong somewhere.”

Inside, several old friends were waiting.

Later that evening, I walked onto the stage and played the same song we’d performed thirty years ago.

The crowd stood and applauded.
