**I Couldn't Have Children, So We Welcomed a 12-Year-Old Boy—On His 18th Birthday, My Husband Unveiled a Secret That Ruined Our Marriage**

At 36, I became a foster parent to 12-year-old Nolan.

He arrived with his belongings in a garbage bag, fearful he might not be permitted to stay.

Over the course of six years, I cherished him as my own child. My husband Richard seemed supportive, although he declined to consider adoption.

On Nolan's 18th birthday, I prepared his favorite pancakes.

Instead of a celebration, he showed up with a suitcase.

"Thank you for everything, Mom."

"Where are you headed?" I inquired.

"Dad said I had to leave when I turned eighteen."

I was shocked.

Richard confessed he had told Nolan this years before.

"Six years is enough. We deserve our freedom back."

Then I uncovered something even more troubling.

Richard had arranged a job for Nolan at his brother's repair shop, secretly intending to withhold most of his earnings to reimburse his upbringing costs.

That evening, I confronted Richard during Nolan's birthday dinner.

His brother validated everything.

Then I disclosed the savings I had quietly accumulated for Nolan's engineering education.

Richard erupted.

"You're prioritizing a foster kid over your husband!"

"Yes," I answered. "I'm choosing my son. And I want a divorce."

I handed Richard a suitcase.

That night, Nolan finally unpacked his own.
