I was seven months pregnant when my husband, Daniel, pushed me during an argument.

I fell against the kitchen counter and broke my wrist.

On the way to the hospital, he told me to say I’d slipped.

“If you tell anyone what happened, I’ll make sure you lose the baby.”

I was terrified.

At the hospital, Daniel answered every question before I could speak.

Then an X-ray technician entered the room.

She looked at me and stopped.

“Emily?”

It was Rachel, my childhood best friend.

We hadn’t spoken in almost three years.

I’d always believed she’d stopped caring about me after my wedding.

Rachel looked at my injuries, then at Daniel.

She quietly asked another nurse to take him outside.

Once we were alone, she said, “I’ve been trying to reach you for years.”

I was confused.

Then she showed me dozens of unanswered messages.

Apparently, Daniel had contacted her after our wedding and told her I wanted nothing to do with her.

He’d done the same thing to several relatives.

That’s when I realized how deliberately he’d isolated me.

Rachel asked whether I felt safe going home.

For the first time, I told someone the truth.

She helped me speak privately with the doctor and a hospital social worker.

With their support, I contacted the police and arranged somewhere safe to stay.
