My son works long hours. His wife stays home with the baby. And if I\u2019m honest, every time I visited, I judged her.<\/p>\n
She always seemed to be on her phone. The baby would cry, and there she was\u2014scrolling. I grew up believing that when a baby cried, you picked them up. Screens felt like laziness.<\/p>\n
Then yesterday changed everything.<\/p>\n
I stopped by unannounced and found my son in the kitchen, holding the baby with one arm while stirring a pot with the other. He looked exhausted\u2014dark circles, slumped shoulders.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhere\u2019s your wife?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe\u2019s resting,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Resting.<\/p>\n
I walked into the bedroom and saw her lying down. Before I could stop myself, I said, \u201cMust be nice to nap while my son raises your child.\u201d<\/p>\n
She looked at me\u2014not angry, just tired.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve been up since 2 a.m.,\u201d she said quietly. \u201cThe baby wouldn\u2019t sleep. Your son made me lie down an hour ago. This is the first rest I\u2019ve had today.\u201d<\/p>\n
Then she said something that stayed with me:<\/p>\n
\u201cYou see five minutes. I live the other twenty-three hours.\u201d<\/p>\n
She walked past me, took the baby from my son, and the crying stopped almost instantly.<\/p>\n
Watching them together, I realized how wrong I\u2019d been. I\u2019d mistaken exhaustion for laziness. Survival for indifference.<\/p>\n
Before I left, I apologized.<\/p>\n
Driving home, I understood something important:<\/p>\n
Being home with a baby isn\u2019t rest.
