I\u2019m Megan, 17, and for as long as I can remember, prom meant wearing my mom\u2019s dress. Lavender satin, embroidered flowers, delicate straps. She wore it to her prom, and before cancer took her when I was 12, she promised I would wear it too.<\/p>\n

That dress wasn\u2019t fashion. It was her voice, her laughter, the proof she\u2019d existed.<\/p>\n

After my mom died, my dad remarried. My stepmom, Stephanie, replaced memories with expensive d\u00e9cor and called anything sentimental \u201cjunk.\u201d When she saw the dress, she sneered. \u201cYou\u2019ll embarrass this family,\u201d she said. \u201cYou\u2019ll wear the designer gown I bought.\u201d<\/p>\n

I refused.<\/p>\n

On prom day, I opened the garment bag and collapsed. The dress was ripped, stained, ruined. Stephanie stood in the doorway, smiling. \u201cI warned you,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

I was still crying when my grandma arrived. Without a word, she grabbed a sewing kit. For hours, she scrubbed, stitched, and saved what mattered. The dress wasn\u2019t perfect\u2014but it was alive.<\/p>\n
