My daughter is eight. She still sleeps with a nightlight and believes I can fix anything. So when she walked through the door that afternoon shaking, eyes red and unfocused, I knew something was wrong.<\/p>\n

She didn\u2019t cry at first. She just whispered, \u201cMy teacher yelled at me\u2026 in front of everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then she swallowed and said, \u201cShe told me my dad must wish I was never born.\u201d<\/p>\n

Something hot rose in my chest. No adult should ever say that to a child.<\/p>\n

I held her until she calmed down, then went straight to the school, furious. The teacher listened calmly and then said, \u201cSir, have you checked your child\u2019s bag?\u201d<\/p>\n
