When I turned eighteen, my grandmother gave me a red cardigan she had knitted herself. The sleeves were uneven, the yarn thick, clearly homemade.<\/p>\n
I muttered a quick \u201cthanks,\u201d folded it, and set it aside. I didn\u2019t hug her. I didn\u2019t try it on. I was young, embarrassed by how simple it was, too busy wanting a bigger life.<\/p>\n
A few weeks later, she passed away.<\/p>\n
I packed the cardigan into a box and forgot about it.<\/p>\n
Years went by. I became a mother. The box moved from house to house, unopened.<\/p>\n
