I learned I was pregnant with my second child just weeks after my husband died in a car accident. I was still grieving when my mother-in-law looked at me coldly and said, \u201cMy son died, and your free ride died with him. Get out.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stood there in shock, holding my three-year-old son\u2019s hand while trying to process her words. Within a day, we packed what little we had and left. With nowhere else to go, we ended up in a small women\u2019s shelter.<\/p>\n

Those first nights were the hardest of my life. My son kept asking when we were going home, and I didn\u2019t know what to tell him.<\/p>\n

One evening, while we were sitting quietly in the common room, an older woman who had been staying there walked up to me. She didn\u2019t say much. She simply pressed something heavy into my palm and closed my fingers around it.<\/p>\n
