At Christmas dinner, my mother-in-law made a big show of saving one last gift just for me. Ever since I gave birth, she had been making little comments about my appearance\u2014how tired I looked or how she had \u201cbounced back faster\u201d at my age.<\/p>\n
She insisted I open the gift in front of everyone and called it \u201csomething special.\u201d<\/p>\n
Inside the box was a gym membership.<\/p>\n
Smiling sweetly, she said, \u201cThis should help you bounce back,\u201d while slowly looking me up and down like the message was obvious.<\/p>\n
I was sitting there holding my newborn, still sore from childbirth and running on almost no sleep. The room went completely quiet. No one laughed. No one said anything.<\/p>\n
It wasn\u2019t a thoughtful gift\u2014it felt like public humiliation.<\/p>\n
Later, I told her privately that it had hurt my feelings. Instead of apologizing, she brushed it off and said I was being too sensitive. According to her, she was \u201cjust trying to help.\u201d<\/p>\n
But my husband saw it differently.<\/p>\n
The very next day, he returned the gym membership. He told her the gift was inappropriate and that I deserved support, not criticism\u2014especially right after having a baby.<\/p>\n
