My twin brother dragged me out of our burning house when we were 14, then ran back inside to save our dog. He never came out. For 31 years, I believed his death was my fault.<\/p>\n

On my 45th birthday, a man knocked on my door with my brother\u2019s face.<\/p>\n

He introduced himself as Ben and handed me a card that said, \u201cHappy birthday, sister.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then he said something that shattered everything I thought I knew.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou and Daniel weren\u2019t twins,\u201d he told me. \u201cThere were three of us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ben explained he had been given up for adoption as a baby because of a leg condition that left him with a limp. After his adoptive parents passed away, he found documents revealing his biological siblings\u2014me and Daniel.<\/p>\n

While searching for answers, Ben tracked down a retired firefighter who had been at our house the night of the fire. The firefighter said Daniel had been alive when they found him and kept whispering the same words:<\/p>\n

\u201cTell my sister\u2026 it was Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n

When we confronted our parents, the truth came out. The fire started because our mother accidentally left the oven on while baking our birthday cake. The cake burned, sparked the fire, and spread through the house.<\/p>\n

They even paid the investigator to keep it out of the report.<\/p>\n

For decades, I believed I caused Daniel\u2019s death.<\/p>\n

But he died trying to warn me it wasn\u2019t my fault.<\/p>\n
