My five-year-old son, Leo, had beautiful golden curls. To me, they were perfect. To my mother-in-law, Brenda, they were a problem. For months, she made cruel comments, saying he \u201clooked like a little girl\u201d and that boys shouldn\u2019t have hair like that. My husband always shut her down, but she never let it go.<\/p>\n

Then last Thursday, I got a call from Leo\u2019s school. Brenda had picked him up, claiming there was a family emergency. When she finally brought him home, Leo stepped out crying, clutching one of his curls in his fist. The rest of his hair was gone, hacked into an uneven buzz cut.
