My MIL, Martha, has become increasingly critical since my father-in-law passed away last year. She constantly comments on my parenting, cooking, and household choices, while my husband brushes it off by saying, \u201cThat\u2019s just how she is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last Sunday, during dinner, Martha suddenly announced she wanted to move into our house to \u201chelp\u201d with our two young children. My husband thought it might be a good idea, but I knew her \u201chelp\u201d would likely mean nonstop criticism and interference.<\/p>\n

After discussing it, I reluctantly agreed\u2014but only with three conditions: she could not criticize my parenting or housekeeping in front of the kids, she had to respect our household routines and parenting rules, and she would need to contribute to chores and expenses if living with us full-time.<\/p>\n

When I explained this to her, Martha became furious. She accused me of treating her like a stranger instead of family and started crying, saying we didn\u2019t trust or appreciate her. She stormed out and is now telling relatives that I\u2019m trying to \u201cextort\u201d her and keep her from her grandchildren.<\/p>\n
