For nearly 10 years, I tried to be the best stepdad I could be. When I married Julia, her daughters Ava and Bella were just 6 and 8 years old. I showed up for everything \u2014 soccer games, recitals, birthdays, school meetings \u2014 and loved them like they were my own.<\/p>\n
But now they\u2019re 16 and 18, and despite everything, they still treat me like an outsider.<\/p>\n
Yesterday, I thought maybe things were finally changing. I surprised them by announcing a birthday trip to Hawaii. Instead of excitement, Ava rolled her eyes while Bella looked me dead in the face and said:<\/p>\n
