When my son Ryan was a college senior, he started dating a girl named Shelley. Just three weeks later, she announced she was pregnant.<\/p>\n

The timing felt strange, so I gently suggested that Ryan request a DNA test before making any life-changing decisions. He did\u2014and when the results said he was the father, he decided to do what he thought was right and marry her.<\/p>\n

Shelley never forgave me for asking. She told everyone I had tried to \u201chumiliate\u201d her. Soon, relatives avoided me, friends judged me, and I was even excluded from the wedding.<\/p>\n

Then, two weeks before the ceremony, Shelley’s mother, Jen, called me in a panic.<\/p>\n
