My ten-year-old daughter, Maya, had always refused to cut her long hair. It reached past her waist and was such an important part of her identity that we called her Rapunzel.<\/p>\n
So when she came home from school with it hacked unevenly above her shoulders, my husband and I assumed bullies had attacked her. We demanded names and nearly called the police.<\/p>\n
Then Maya handed us a note from Liam, a new student in her class.<\/p>\n
Liam had recently finished chemotherapy and lost all his hair. Some children mocked his bald head, but Maya sat beside him every day and defended him. When Liam told her his family was collecting hair for a real-hair wig, Maya decided to donate hers.<\/p>\n
