My husband, Greg, and I had been married for fifteen years, so our weekday mornings were usually anything but romantic.<\/p>\n

The alarm went off, coffee started brewing, and we both rushed around trying to get ready for work.<\/p>\n

That morning, however, Greg suddenly stopped brushing his teeth and looked at me as though we were newlyweds again.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou look amazing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

I laughed because I was wearing an old robe, my hair was everywhere, and I hadn\u2019t even had coffee yet.<\/p>\n

But he continued complimenting me, pulled me close, and turned an ordinary rushed morning into a surprisingly romantic one.<\/p>\n

Afterward, Greg stood in front of the bathroom mirror with an enormous grin.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou seem very proud of yourself,\u201d I teased.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, I am,\u201d he replied.<\/p>\n

Then I noticed he wasn\u2019t admiring himself.<\/p>\n

He was staring at his fitness tracker.<\/p>\n

Apparently, his watch had congratulated him for completing an intense workout and announced that he had reached his daily exercise goal before 7 a.m.<\/p>\n

I stared at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cWait\u2026 was this about your fitness challenge?\u201d<\/p>\n

Greg immediately started laughing.<\/p>\n

He admitted that his coworkers had started a monthly activity competition, and he was determined to beat his best friend.<\/p>\n

I threw a towel at him and said, \u201cNext time, at least pretend I\u2019m more important than your step count.\u201d<\/p>\n

He kissed me and replied, \u201cYou definitely are. The calories are just a bonus.\u201d<\/p>\n

I spent the rest of the morning laughing.<\/p>\n

Marriage may lose some of its early mystery\u2014but apparently, it can gain a very strange sense of competition.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
