When my new husband, Nathan, and I left for our honeymoon, his mother, Diane, offered to watch my eight-year-old son, Lucas.<\/p>\n

I was grateful. Lucas was from my previous marriage, and Diane had always acted welcoming toward him.<\/p>\n

Two days into our trip, she called sounding frantic.<\/p>\n

\u201cClaire, you need to come home immediately. Something happened to Lucas. Don\u2019t wait.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before I could ask questions, she hung up.<\/p>\n

Nathan and I rushed to the airport and spent the entire flight terrified.<\/p>\n

But when we reached home, Lucas opened the door himself.<\/p>\n

He looked completely healthy.<\/p>\n

I turned toward Diane, furious, but Lucas quietly pulled a folded paper from his pocket.<\/p>\n

It was a handwritten list of boarding schools, along with notes about tuition and enrollment dates.<\/p>\n

Then Lucas told me Diane had spent the weekend explaining that newlyweds needed \u201ctime to build their own family\u201d and suggesting he might be happier living somewhere else.<\/p>\n

My blood ran cold.<\/p>\n

Diane finally admitted the emergency had been invented because she wanted us home so Nathan could \u201cdeal with the situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nathan stared at his mother in disbelief.<\/p>\n

\u201cLucas is the situation?\u201d he asked. \u201cHe\u2019s my son too now.\u201d<\/p>\n

He told her to leave immediately.<\/p>\n

We later finished our honeymoon with Lucas included in a short family trip.<\/p>\n

Diane eventually apologized, but trust took much longer to rebuild.<\/p>\n
