I had worked at a small downtown restaurant for almost three years when my boss, Martin, announced that an old friend of his would be performing there.<\/p>\n

His name was Trevor, and apparently he had once dreamed of becoming a professional singer.<\/p>\n

The moment he arrived, he acted like a celebrity.<\/p>\n

He bragged to the staff, criticized the stage setup, and seemed offended when I didn\u2019t immediately recognize him.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho even are you?\u201d he snapped. \u201cWhy didn\u2019t you welcome me?\u201d<\/p>\n

A few minutes later, he complained to Martin that I was disrespectful.<\/p>\n

Without even hearing my side, Martin sent me to help in the kitchen.<\/p>\n

Then Trevor started singing.<\/p>\n

It was painful.<\/p>\n

He missed notes, forgot half the lyrics, and eventually stopped mid-song while several customers laughed.<\/p>\n

Martin panicked.<\/p>\n

Instead of blaming Trevor, he came charging into the kitchen.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou threw him off!\u201d he yelled at me. \u201cGet out there and entertain them, or you\u2019re fired.\u201d<\/p>\n

What Martin had forgotten was that before working there, I had spent years performing with a local jazz group.<\/p>\n

I walked onto the stage, borrowed the microphone, and sang one song.<\/p>\n

Then another.<\/p>\n

The room completely changed.<\/p>\n

Customers applauded, started requesting songs, and stayed far longer than expected.<\/p>\n

At closing time, Martin tried to act like the whole thing had been his idea.<\/p>\n

I handed him my apron.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were ready to fire me for someone else\u2019s failure,\u201d I said. \u201cSo now you can find someone else to save your nights.\u201d<\/p>\n
