A few days after my wedding, my cousin called and asked if I knew what my husband\u2019s mother had been saying during the reception.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

My mom, Elena, had worn a beautiful embroidered dress from our family\u2019s heritage. She had spent months having it altered and had been nervous about wearing something so traditional at a modern hotel wedding.<\/p>\n

I thought she looked incredible.<\/p>\n

So did most of our guests.<\/p>\n

But apparently, my mother-in-law, Diane, had made several remarks about how my mom \u201cdidn\u2019t dress for the occasion\u201d and looked like she had shown up to the wrong event.<\/p>\n

What hurt most was learning my mother had overheard one of them.<\/p>\n

She never told me.<\/p>\n

When I called her, she brushed it off.<\/p>\n

\u201cHoney, it was your day. I wasn\u2019t going to let something silly ruin it.\u201d<\/p>\n

That somehow made me even angrier.<\/p>\n

I opened my laptop and emailed our photographer.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t ask her to delete Diane from the pictures or edit anything petty.<\/p>\n

Instead, I asked for extra photographs of my mother.<\/p>\n

Her getting ready.<\/p>\n

Her adjusting my veil.<\/p>\n

Her dancing with my father.<\/p>\n

Her laughing with my aunts.<\/p>\n

I also chose a full-page portrait of Mom in her traditional dress for the opening section of our wedding album.<\/p>\n

When Diane saw the finished book weeks later, she paused on that page.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a very prominent photo,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

I smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt should be. My mom looked beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n

She didn\u2019t say another word.<\/p>\n
