My neighbor, Evelyn, had lived alone for years.<\/p>\n

She was 79, soft-spoken, and usually spent her evenings gardening or reading on her porch.<\/p>\n

Then a young man started visiting.<\/p>\n

He looked about 25 and arrived three or four evenings a week.<\/p>\n

At first, I assumed he was a grandson.<\/p>\n

But shortly after he entered, I would hear strange noises through the shared wall.<\/p>\n

Loud shouting.<\/p>\n

Furniture moving.<\/p>\n

Sometimes even something crashing onto the floor.<\/p>\n

Evelyn never mentioned him.<\/p>\n

After several weeks, I started worrying that she might be in trouble.<\/p>\n

One evening, the noise became especially loud, so I walked over and knocked.<\/p>\n

Everything immediately went quiet.<\/p>\n

Boxing lessons.<\/p>\n

The shouting I had heard was Evelyn counting punches.<\/p>\n

The crashes were training pads and lightweight equipment hitting the floor.<\/p>\n

She invited me inside and proudly demonstrated a combination she had learned.<\/p>\n

After that, whenever I heard banging next door, I stopped worrying.<\/p>\n

Mostly.<\/p>\n
