My 12-year-old daughter Ava sent me a smiling photo from scout camp saying everything was great. At first, I felt relieved\u2014until I noticed Maddie in the background.<\/p>\n
Maddie had gone home sick the night before.<\/p>\n
I called Ava twice. No answer. Then I called the camp.<\/p>\n
Her counselor told me the photo was old and that Ava was in the health cabin because of an ankle injury. But when I drove to camp, the nurse admitted there was no swelling or bruising.<\/p>\n
Ava finally confessed: she had faked the injury because her troop was cheating in a major competition.<\/p>\n
She had tried to speak up, but her friends pressured her to stay quiet. Even worse, when she told her counselor, she was warned not to accuse people without proof.<\/p>\n
Ava didn\u2019t want to cheat, betray her friends, or destroy her team\u2019s chances of winning. So she tried to disappear from the competition instead.<\/p>\n
Eventually, the camp director investigated. The cheating was confirmed, and Ava\u2019s troop was disqualified.<\/p>\n
Her best friend blamed her for ruining everything.<\/p>\n
On the drive home, Ava asked if I was disappointed.<\/p>\n
I told her I was disappointed that she lied and tried to handle everything alone\u2014but proud that when the choice finally mattered, she told the truth even though she knew it would cost her friendships and the competition.<\/p>\n
