For years, I believed Dad had excluded me from company dinners, weddings, and family events because of the vitiligo patches on my face. When I was 16, I wore Mom\u2019s blue dress and waited to attend his company banquet.<\/p>\n
At the last minute, Dad looked at me and said only one daughter could go.<\/p>\n
He took Lily.<\/p>\n
But the badge in the box proved there had always been a place for me.<\/p>\n
Dad finally admitted the truth.<\/p>\n
Years earlier, a colleague had made an insensitive comment about my skin. Dad froze instead of defending me. Mom later told him, \u201cNext time, stand beside your daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n
