I paid for an elderly woman’s groceries when her card was declined – two days later, I returned to the same store and my son exclaimed, “WOW! It had been one of those long days — energy running low, waiting on payday, feeling drained. The woman ahead appeared to be in her late 70s. Her shopping cart was filled with basics: bread, milk, canned soup, a bag of potatoes, and just one apple pie. She moved carefully, her eyes following each item as it scanned. As the total appeared, she paused, then tried her card. Declined. The cashier made another attempt. No luck. Frustration rippled through the line. A man behind muttered, “SERIOUSLY? EVERY TIME!” Someone else exhaled loudly. “IF YOU CAN’T AFFORD IT, DON’T HOLD EVERYONE UP!” The older woman’s hands shook. She quietly said, “I can put the pie back…” I found myself responding, “Don’t worry, I’ve got it.” I tapped my card. The cashier looked caught off guard but didn’t protest.
