The Woman Who Had a Key to My Apartment

I had been away for almost two months helping my mother recover after a serious illness.
When I finally came home, I was exhausted and just wanted a shower and a quiet morning.
Then I heard the front door unlock.
A woman I had never seen before walked into my apartment carrying a tote bag.
We both froze.
“Who are you?” she asked.
I almost laughed.
“I live here. Who are you?”
She looked confused.
Then she said, “Michael gave me a key. He told me I could come whenever I wanted.”
My stomach dropped.
Michael was my husband.
I told her that.
Her face went pale.
“He told me he was single.”
I was furious, but something still felt wrong.
So instead of throwing her out, I said, “Come with me.”
I led her into the kitchen.
My husband was sitting at the table eating breakfast.
The woman stopped cold.
Then she whispered, “That’s not Michael.”
Now I was confused.
It turned out she had been dating a man who had used my husband’s first name and somehow gotten access to an old spare key.
The real “Michael” was actually my husband’s younger cousin, who had been staying in our apartment occasionally while I was away.
He had copied the key without permission and had been using our place to impress women while pretending it was his.
My husband was furious.
The woman was humiliated.
And I was relieved for exactly five seconds before realizing someone in our own family had been treating our home like his private hotel.
The locks were changed that same afternoon.
