After my son, Liam, was born, sleep became almost impossible.
The strange part was that he could fall asleep peacefully in my arms, on the couch, or in his bassinet downstairs.
But the second I placed him in his crib, he screamed.
Not normal fussing.
Panicked, desperate crying.
I asked our pediatrician more than once, but nothing obvious seemed wrong.
My husband, Adam, thought I was overthinking it.
Then one night, Liam had been crying for nearly twenty minutes.
Suddenly, everything went silent.
Too silent.
Adam and I hurried upstairs.
The crib was empty.
I screamed.
Then we heard a faint rustling sound near the closet.
Adam opened the door.
Our cat, Milo, was crouched inside beside Liam’s blanket.
And there, tucked carefully inside a large laundry basket on the closet floor, was our baby.
My knees nearly gave out.
The explanation was bizarre but simple.
The crib mattress had been positioned beside a loose section of fabric from a hanging organizer. Liam had started grabbing at it while moving around. Earlier that evening, Adam had briefly lifted him from the crib while changing the sheets, then accidentally placed him in the laundry basket when the doorbell rang.
Exhausted, neither of us remembered.
When we realized what happened, we just stood there staring at each other.
Liam was completely fine.
But that night forced us to admit how dangerously tired we both were.
We rearranged the nursery, stopped trying to “push through” exhaustion, and started asking family for more help.
And as for the mysterious crib screaming?
A few days later, we discovered the mattress cover had a rough seam pressing against his back.
Once we replaced it, the screaming stopped.
