The Brother My Father Tried to Hide

I took a DNA test mostly out of curiosity.
I expected ancestry percentages.
Instead, I got a close-family match named Daniel.
According to the site, he was my brother.
When I showed my father, his face drained of color.
He admitted he’d had an affair years earlier and told me Daniel must have been the result.
“Please don’t tell your mother,” he begged.
I promised nothing, but I needed answers.
So I contacted Daniel.
We met at a coffee shop a week later.
The moment he saw me, he looked shaken.
Then he started asking strange questions.
“Do you remember the lake behind the old house?”
I frowned.
He described the backyard, the broken swing, and our childhood dog, Scruffy.
Details no stranger should have known.
Finally, I said, “Dad told me you’re the child from his affair.”
Daniel stared at me.
Then he slowly shook his head.
“No. You are.”
My stomach dropped.
Daniel explained that we had actually lived together when we were very young.
After our father’s affair was discovered, my mother left temporarily.
During the chaos, Dad took me with him and eventually raised me with the woman I had always believed was my biological mother.
Daniel stayed behind with our birth mother.
I had been so young that most of those memories disappeared.
Dad had rewritten the story because admitting the truth would have meant exposing decades of lies.
When I confronted him again, he finally admitted everything.
The DNA test hadn’t uncovered a secret brother.
It had uncovered the fact that part of my own childhood had been hidden from me.
And Daniel wasn’t the stranger.
I was the one who had been taken away.
