I Asked a Coworker to Pretend to Be My Boyfriend at My Ex-Husband’s Wedding, but He Teased Me and Said, ‘No One Would Date You’ – So My Fake Date Wiped the Smile off His Face

My ex-husband Max invited me to his wedding with a cruel message: “Bring a +1, but we both know you don’t have anyone.”

After thirteen years of marriage, Max had left me for his personal trainer, Claire, constantly criticizing my weight before the divorce.

I almost skipped the wedding, but our daughters wanted me there.

So I asked my coworker Edward to pretend to be my boyfriend.

When Max saw us, he laughed.

“No one would date you,” he said. “Especially someone like him. Did you pay him?”

Edward calmly smiled and said he had brought Max a wedding gift.

Minutes later, he returned with a large cardboard box.

Inside was an enormous pair of trousers.

“They were mine,” Edward explained.

Years earlier, Edward had been much heavier. One day at work, he refused birthday cake and insulted his own body. I had told him, “I don’t like hearing you talk about yourself that way.”

He never forgot it.

Edward told Max that I hadn’t inspired him to become thinner—I had reminded him that he deserved respect before changing anything.

Then Edward asked Max one question:

“If you’re so happy with Claire, why are you still trying to prove Veronica is undesirable?”

Max stopped smiling.

Later, my daughter asked why I had pretended Edward was my boyfriend.

I admitted I wanted Max to think someone wanted me.

She simply said, “But we wanted you here.”

That was the only answer I needed.
