Prince William and Kate Middleton just quietly changed their titles
Prince William and Princess Kate appeared under different titles during a recent visit to Scotland, leaving some royal fans confused.
While they are widely known as the Prince and Princess of Wales, in Scotland they traditionally use the titles Duke and Duchess of Rothesay.
The title has centuries of history, dating back to 1396, when it became associated with the heir to the Scottish throne. The tradition continued after Scotland and England united.
William and Kate also hold several other titles, including Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and Earl and Countess of Chester.
The couple are also expected to begin granting Royal Warrants, allowing selected businesses that regularly supply the royal household to display the appropriate Royal Arms.
Prince George could eventually inherit the Duke of Rothesay title when William becomes King.
For now, William and Kate’s official titles simply change depending on where in the United Kingdom they are carrying out royal duties.
