My DIL Dropped off Her Three Kids for the Weekend Without Asking and Texted, ‘You’ll Manage’ – So I Made One Call Before She Returned

Friday evening, my daughter-in-law Vanessa dropped my three grandchildren on my porch without warning and drove away.
When I called, she simply said, “You’ll manage.”
My son Eric later told me Vanessa had claimed I agreed to babysit.
I hadn’t.
The next morning, my eight-year-old grandson Brooks asked, “Grandma, are we going to live with you now?”
That’s when I opened their suitcase.
Inside were far too many clothes for a weekend, schoolbooks, medication, insurance papers—and all three children’s birth certificates.
Then Brooks said their mother had told them to pack their important things.
Eric rushed home.
Soon after, Vanessa returned unexpectedly. Brooks was holding her tablet and noticed something strange: plane tickets for Vanessa, the children…and Eric.
Vanessa finally confessed.
For months, she had wanted the family to move closer to her mother, while Eric kept postponing the conversation because of work.
So Vanessa secretly bought tickets and planned to give him an ultimatum:
“Come with us or don’t.”
She had even written him a goodbye letter in case he refused.
Eric admitted he had avoided their problems, but Vanessa’s plan had terrified the children.
Nobody boarded the plane.
Later, Vanessa apologized to me for using my reliability as permission.
I told her:
“Don’t confuse my ability to handle something with your right to dump it on me.”
The next time she needed a babysitter, she called four days ahead and asked.
This time, I said yes.
