We Were Supposed to Move to Alaska Together — Then I Came Home and Found My Things Packed

I was 24 and living rent-free in my mom’s house with my fiancé, Tyler.
He had been struggling to keep steady work, mostly because he had trouble waking up on time. We were both worried about money and what our future would look like.
Then my mom offered us a chance to start over.
She lived in rural Alaska and told us we could stay with her for a while, save money, and find better-paying work.
To my surprise, Tyler loved the idea.
We started packing almost immediately.
Before the move, I took a short goodbye trip with my girlfriends.
When I returned three days later, I knew something was wrong the second I opened the door.
Most of Tyler’s things were gone.
Several of my boxes had been unpacked.

Then I saw my suitcase sitting beside the front door.
A note was taped to it.
“I’m going without you. I think I need to figure out my life alone.”
I called him repeatedly.
No answer.
Then my mom called.
Tyler had already contacted her and said I had changed my mind about moving.
I hadn’t.
That was the moment I realized the problem wasn’t Alaska.
It was that he had made a life-changing decision for both of us without even giving me a conversation.
I canceled the move.
He still went.
And strangely, being left behind became the fresh start I actually needed.
